What is Peanut?

Peanut is a real-time multiplayer solitaire card game where 2 to 8 players race at the same time to empty a pile of 10 cards onto shared foundations. Across the English-speaking world, the same game goes by different names — Nerts, Nertz, Racing Demon, Pounce — but the game itself is the same. If your family called it Peanut, this is that game.

Why do some families call it Peanut?

Peanut is a family-name variant that spread through specific social circles in North America. It never made it into the "official" card-game references the way Nerts or Racing Demon did, but it's one of the most enduring folk names for the game. If you grew up playing Peanut at a cabin, a dorm, or a kitchen table, this is that game.

Peanut rules

• Each player has their own deck (with a distinct card back).
• Deal a 10-card Peanut pile (top card face up), 5 Klondike-style work columns (1 to 5 cards, only the top card face up), and keep the rest as a stock.
• Build foundations in the middle by suit, Ace up to King. Anyone can play on any foundation.
• Build your tableau down in alternating colors.
• First to empty their Peanut pile calls "Peanut!" and the round ends.
• Score. +1 per foundation card played, -2 per card left in your Peanut pile. First to the target score wins.
